so i was wondering why my pc is saying that my default and also recommended resolution is 1366x768? it lets me put it into 1080 and everything looks just fine. am i hurting my screen by doing this or is it bad that i put it in 1080?

hurting your your screen ?
defiantly not!
the the higher the resolution the more pixels there are on your screen so if your windows is recommending your resolution is 1366x768 means your screen is only 720p not full HD but pushing it to 1920x1080 will not effect your screen it is still 720p but your graphics card will be told to push 1080p and it will put more strain on your graphics card and it will make no difference as your screen is only 1366x768 if you want to go full HD you need to get a full HD screen or a Ultra HD screen which is the new 4k displays
