OK you could try disabling some unnecessary services OK first make a restore point just in case you disable some system ones accidentally then go into run and type services.msc and hit enter then go disable these services: Alerter, Clipbook, Computer Browser, Distributed Link Tracking Client, Indexing Service, IPSEC Services, Messenger, Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing, Portable Media Serial Number, Remote Desktop Help Session Manager, Remote Procedure Call Locator, Remote Registry, Secondary Logon, Routing & Remote Access, Server, SSDP Discovery Service, Telnet, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Upload Manager, Universal Plug and Play Device Host, Windows Time, OK it looks like a lot but it helps :). hope it works mate and good luck

You might want to try the following to troubleshoot to if it is a hardware problem or software problem.
1) run chdsk on your harddrive to see if you have any bad sectors
2) try degfraging your harddrive
3) check to see in your task monitor if you are using alot of ram or cpu cycles
4) if using a lot of ram try uninstalling some of your unused software
