Question on Soundcards

I'm currently using a 7.1 surround headset, with decent bass/trebble and meh sound quality.

That been said, can someone please bring me up to speed on what the differences would be if I were to throw a higher-end soundcard into the mix.

Would there be an improved sound quality? Bass? Surround?

Or would something like this be obtained through a higher end headset?

Thanks!

Solution

The top choices I can recommend, listed in rough order of output quality:

ASUS Xonar DG(X): ~$40
ASUS Xonar D1/DX: ~$70
Creative Soundblaster Z: ~$99
ASUS Xonar Phoebus: ~$170
ASUS Xonar Essence ST/STX: ~$200
Creative Soundblaster ZxR: ~$200

The D1/DX is the only card on the list without a dedicated headphone amp. Also note...
"True" surround headsets have to make a LOT of design sacrifices to fit 4 drivers per cup. I've long recommend simply getting a soundcard with Virtual Surround + a good stereo headphone for that reason. I doubt a soundcard would really help much in this case.

I appreciate the feedback, and already have a stereo headset in mind, however could you suggest a decent Soundcard? Price is irellevant.
