due to certain constraints, i'm going to have to park this thing on TOP of my desk, not tucked away in a mess of wires and dust underneath it. because of this, i'd like to buy a mac mini, install windows 8, and call it a day.

however, due to the lack of a BIOS and actual driver support, the Mac Mini is ruled out.

Intel NUC, Gigabyte Brix, etc are bumped off the list too, just not crazy about the notebook hardware unless its as pretty as a Mac Mini.

so far ive found the Silverstone Fortress Mini. its a bit taller than i'd like, but that might not be a bad thing, as it opens the ability to run a superior CPU cooler and an actual graphics card in the future should i so desire. im really not crazy about how everything comes out of the top either, but i can deal with that as well unless someone suggests something better.

basically, i don't have the time, patience, nor desire to scour the web looking at every available option out there. this isn't really much of a hobby for me like it is for a lot of you guys. im more of a "set it and forget it" kind of person when it comes to computers, and my trusty old Lenovo Ideacentre A310 has served me just fine until recently.

so basically i need suggestions on a case and motherboard. price isn't really an issue, as i only buy a computer once every few years, and id rather spend it once upfront vs spend it again upgrading in 3 months

Mini-ITX or Mini/Micro-ATX board
will be running a 3rd or 4th gen quad core i7
2 slots for ram is enough, 4 would be better
minimum 2 expansion slots for Wifi & HDMI if not built in to board
1 PCIe slot to add a graphics card in the future would be nice(i only play SimCity, Civilization, and videos)
one 2.5" internal drive bay minimum, slot loading optical would be a nice bonus

thanks in advance ;)

Might I suggest 1 of the following, seeing as once you buy one of them you will keep the chassis forever and just replace what's inside (contrary to what we all do):

Corsair Obsidian
NZXT Phantom 410 or 820 black
Thermaltake Chaser MK1
Coolermaster CM Storm
Silverstone Temjin TJ01
Silverstone Raven
Cooler Master HAF 912 or 922
NZXT Guardian
Thermaltake Level 10GT

As for Motherboard take the: ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe, Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H or the MSI G45

LOL. did you miss the stylish part or the SFF part? im pretty sure everything you suggested was a full size tower, and half of them looked like robots.

im looking for small and stylish. something that can almost blend in. not an LED & Lexan filled monstrosity that rivals a Countach for its amount of vents and gnarly angles

thanks for trying, but no thanks :/

I missed the SSF, sorry was in a rush, a few were mid towers and I beg to differ the Corsair Obsidian is sleek.

Here are some nice SSF. Apologies I read fast and sometimes skip a word.

My personal recommendation is the: Fractal Design Node 304
others to look at:
Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced
BitFenix Prodigy
Silverstone Sugo SG-09 or the 05

Have you considered the ISK cases by Antec:

Add a Gigabyte GA-H87N-WiFi motherboard with built in WiFi and an Intel i7-4770S 65W TDP CPU and you'll have a very potent system that takes up very little desk space (each case comes with a pedestal to sit vertically). Although, you would be limited to half-height video cards if you choose to not use the Intel HD4600.

I built a little gaming system for my son using the silver case with an Ivy i3 and a Radeon 7750. It works really well. The i7-4770S might leave enough headroom for a 7750. According to this vendor selling a similar system, they claim 80W draw at full CPU load. A 7750 draws 43W maximum (source).
