I bought a new computer with Win 8 installed. I want to completely remove it and go back to XP Pro. Can I do this? If so, how?
Thanks.

It's really difficult to get XP running on a new machine since it doesn't support the latest hardware. Even downgrading to Windows 7 may be a challenge but if you really want XP i suggest either trying virtual software or finding a machine that is capable of running XP (most likely you'll need a motherboard with IDE or early SATA, before 2008).

There is a guide here that may or may not work but you'll have to get the ethernet drivers (as XP usually will not recognize it without the drivers) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130209040507AA8BcJR onto something where you can access the drivers from the installation. It sounds like you need a SATA driver as well.

If the pc is recent enough to come with windows 8 as standard, it might need some motherboard and chipset drivers xp doesnt have. In short, you might not even get the pc to function without some very crafty boot disk creation. If you know nothing about this, I would not recommend trying.
Its beyond my experience, thats for sure.

Thanks aatje and Chriss. Points taken. Already tried installing and booting from disc. No-go. Won't even get to that point before it is rejected. So, what about I replace my motherboard with a version that will work with older OS? Will that do it?

Wow, that IS a drastic measure. You are actually talking about using parts that are maybe half the performance just to run an older system? You might have to go back to socket 775 for that. It might be better to see if you can find somebody who for a few greenbacks could create you a custom boot disk. ASrock STILL MAKE a 775 board, g31 chipset that has been spliced onto ddr 3 ram sokets so you could use the ram you have. It costs about £40. You would have to check its still XP compliant. Q6600 chips can be found anywhere in the western world for £35. You could overclock to i3 2100 performance easy. Its a lotta work to go backwards..Why cant you change the ui on 8 to make it easier for you?
I wouldnt want to go backwards. Can any software boys help out here?
