Howdy folks.

Found an AMD Opteron 3320 EE going for £171 on ebay inc postage. Just found out about opteron processors, and the 20W TDP completely intrigues me.

Thing is, I havenae found any benchmarks for it. Would anybody have any residin' somewhere?

Ideally, it'd be compared against the usual CPUs; 965 BE, i5 2500k, 8350, i7 3930K, etc.

Thanks in advance.

On paper, this is a neat CPU. Specs can be found here:

Having used server grade Opterons in desktops in the past, I can tell you they perform well. They are built for stability and reliability, so don't plan to OC. They will computationally perform on par with a similarly clocked Phenom, in fact, performance will be indistinguishable between the 2 of them. The only issue you may find is one of motherboard compatibility.

This version will certainly run cool and sip power. Do you intend to use as a gaming platform (not really built for that) or a server/general purpose system (should be excellent for either)?

Regarding benchmarks, you will have a...

Regarding benchmarks, you will have a hard time finding any direct comparisons (server vs. desktop grade CPUs). You can infer performance by comparing a similar AMD CPU of the same speed.

The idea I was having, was to chuck my TX3 Evo ontop and super clock the lil' ah heck and use it as a mega gaming proccy. Welp, that got dispelled pretty quickly.

Thanks anyway. 'Preciate it.

OCing with Opterons can be difficult (if not impossible). They are locked CPUs (at least recent ones have been). That makes sense, too, as they are designed for server/workstation use where stability, reliability, precision, etc rules over raw speed.

But to simon12's point, it really is a downclocked BD CPU that is locked to be as efficient as possible (think his density server farms from a noise, power, and heat standpoint).
