So here we go. It began about a year ago when I decided to play BF3, my first modern PC game (the only other one I played was NFS: Most Wanted from 2005). I left everything alone on the graphics settings and played normally. After one hour the gpu would overheat. No problem, I wasn't really into BF3 anyway.
Fast forward one year and we are here. I'm making the switch to budget PC gaming, and I'm completely content with the graphics settings I am on with my current rig.
However, on any game I try to play (even LoL), the gpu will spike to 105C and shut down. I have tried cleaning out the fan, the heatsink, and replacing the thermal paste. Nothing worked. Airflow is great, I have a sidefan blowing air right onto the GPU. I don't know what to do anymore.
Since this is my first post here are my comp specs:
Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6700 @2.66 Ghz
nForce 780i SLI Motherbboard
EVGA GTX 280
4GB DDR2 RAM
1250w Gold PSU (Do not know exact model, but 100% sure it is not PSU related)
What other GPU could I buy at around a $150 or lower price point that is compatible with my system? Better yet, what can I do to not make my GPU blow itself up?
Quick Edit: I would like to play at 1080p at medium/low settings at around 50-60 fps.
