So I've seen cables that say HDMI to DVI and I've seen ones that say DVI to HDMI. What is the difference, if any?

For context, I'm looking for a connection from my motherboard (HDMI) to my screen (DVI-D). I'm guessing the first one is what I need, but I'm not really sure.

There's no difference between transmission through DVI and HDMI. Both use the same type of digital signal to transmit data. One difference is that HDMI can carry an audio signal.

Other than that, its the same thing, just two different connectors optimised for different uses. There will be no loss in either one you use, as there is no conversion going on.

It doesn't matter, it works both ways.

There really the same cable - What you need to double check is the sex.
I think your computer and monitor both have a female, so cable needs to be Male at both ends, But as I said just double check by looking at compuetr and monitor.
