Minimum internet speed required for Online Gameplay?

What is the minimum up and down speed for playing FPS games? I have up 55 kb/s and down sometimes min - 33 kb/s max 135 kb/s.
My ping is 50 minimum. Even though when i play BF3 which requires more internet, it shows 50 or 60 ms response time, it seems like it 100 or 200. But mostly when im losing ;) And sometimes when im winning too.

I am amazed you can connect to any game servers let alone play at only 55kb/s. I would think at 250kb/s you would probably be alright but not any slower.
I am used to getting 1400kb/s when I am doing stuff.

I just moved to other place and now i have optics(not sure if they are called like that in english-maybe fiber cable?)
And i have 11 mb/s download. with 4 ping on nearby servers. I have 100/10 mb/s package :D

its actually possible to play fps games on dialup. before we had fios optical that is all that was available in our area.

it lagged like horrible and was practically unplayable but it did work. 250-300 ping.

now i'm using 50/35 fios so dont have any such problems.

as far as a minimum i would say 500kbps although 1-3mbps + would be recommended

ssddx, I know that people used to play games at playable rates with dial-up, I played Diablo on it years and years ago. I just wasn't sure if modern games were able to. Your description sounds pretty much how it would be now though.

500kbps probably would perform better. I could see some lag still on 256k but I do think it would be playable.

Good thing he has optical now.

That's true... It was horrible... but i made it. :D
I would give up my third monitor for optical.
