Hi, I built a gaming computer about a month ago, and since the beginning I've always heard this high pitch rattling/vibration noise coming from the hard drive. At first I though it was loose or something, so i took the hard drive out, and it would still make the noise when it was outside the case. I downloaded the WD lifeguard diagnostics and it passed all tests. The noise is very similar to the one in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7uoUau7qkI

but my hard drive makes that noise all the time, but sometimes it gets louder, and sometimes you can barely hear it. m not sure if the drive is failing or I am just being paranoid. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a 1TB WD Black, it was running hot, vibrating and generally being noising. Being paranoid a bought another 1TB WD Black. It runs cooler, but its not a silent drive by any means. My conclusion was since it was a higher performance drive than my WD Greens, it would vibrate more and generally be louder. Whether I’m right in thinking that, I don’t know.

If your still worried (and don’t have a backup), buy a new drive and use your old one as a backup for your new drive. You can compare the noise and vibration levels. If it sounds better, then you might have avoided data loss and now have a backup drive. If it’s the same, then you now have a backup drive for your data…which you should have anyways :p

well since thats a normal working drive then I would guess that you are just being paranoid.

You also could actually be transferring drive vibrations thru to the case. Try locating the source of the noise, does pressing on the drive cage reduce it? Pressing on the drive?

Hi, thanks for the reply, but no. The noise is internal, and it seems to be getting worse. Its hard to describe, its very similar to the noise in the video i linked but higher pitched.
