Graphics & Processor Question

Would someone please tell me which would be the better or the items below?

NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 1GB graphics with Optimus
or
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5 VRAM

2nd generation Intel Core i7-2450M processor 2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost
or
Intel® Core™ i7 2630QM with Turbo Boost

I simply don't know enough about laptops/laptop performance to know the difference. Please help.
Thank you!

  1. GTX 460m

    Core i7 2630QM

Neither of these are exactly new by any standards. Just making sure you know what you're buying.
  2. I agree with hizodge. Even though the graphics card is a gen behind versus the 525, the 525 is a lower end model. But with that high end processor with real demanding stuff you're still going to be bottlenecking through the graphics either way.

Bottlenecking isn't the correct term for this. 2nd gen Core i7qm will be perfectly viable with a GTX460m, but they're not exactly bleeding edge technology anymore. As such they are only a smart buy if he can get them on the cheap and can't afford to stretch his budget any higher for new stuff. That's what I was trying to say.

I think I should have clarified. My laptop is 2 years old and has the:
    Intel® Core™ i7 2630QM with Turbo Boost
    with
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5 VRAM

My sons school requires every student to have a laptop. They stated this as the requirement:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M 1GB graphics with Optimus
    with
2nd generation Intel Core i7-2450M processor 2.50 GHz with Turbo Boost

I think what I am looking for is to find out if mine is better than (or as good as) what they require. If so he can use mine.

Allright. My apologies for extrapolating the nature of the question.

I assume the requirements are for some sort of graphically demanding applications (video/photo editing/3D modelling etc.) Unless they specifically stated that some feature or software-based compatibility only found in Nvidia 500-series core architecture is required, I'd assume that they only listed the GT 525m as a minimum performance requirement in which case your old laptop with GTX 460m should do just fine.
  6. THANK YOU!
