I seen an article that had a computer for under $300 http://lifehacker.com/5840963/the-best-pcs-you-can-buil...

Their's came to $281. I realized I could improve it AND make it cheaper! I substituted an AMD A4-3400 over the 3300 for and extra .2 ghz and only $3 more. I also took out the $45 power supply they had and went with a case/psu combo for $30. This computer would use the free Ubuntu operating system. I am thinking I will probably order the parts and build it, even though I don't need it. :-)

Laptops are more or less overpriced with small performance. Unless you look at refurb models.

The performance would be relatively good for the money. For comparison my cheap $300 HP laptop has an AMD e-450 chip with a passmark score of 792. The A4-3400 has a score of 1641, so that's double.

I do have a desktop I built with an i7-3770, 16gb memory, and SSD. But I wouldn't mind building this computer it'd be fun to have a dedicated Ubuntu machine. And I thought maybe there would be other people looking to build a budget computer.
