Realtek HD audio not playing sound and showing there is a microphone where there isn't

I just bought a new hard drive, and when I installed windows 7 onto it I couldn't get any sound through it.
Realtek is telling me I have a microphone plugged into the front panel (which I haven't), and that there's something in the s/pdif slot (there isn't).

(sorry about the link, it was saying I have to be a confirmed member to post images, though I've already clicked the link that is meant to confirm me as a member)
The sound was working fine before I installed windows on my new drive so I'm not sure what the problem is, but i'm guessing it's hardware related, as now when I plug my old drive back in, the same problem occurs.
I have an Asus P8Z68-V pro/gen3 mobo, and the new drive is a kingston hyperx 3K ssd 120GB.
I've had a browse, and it seems that others have had this problem beofre, but I couldn't find a working solution for it. I have taken out the front panel HD audio to try and disable the them completely, but it's still saying there is a microphone plugged in.
I'm not certain that the microphone problem and the sound problem are related, but I assume they are.
The speakers are set to be the default device, and the volume mixer shows that sound is being played with the little green bars, it just isn't coming out of the speakers.
Any help would be hugely appreciated, I don't think I can live without my speakers

that circle with the orange tick, that means its been set to default device. When you click the mic icon, what options are there in the drop down box that is labeled as default device? can you change it to anything other than being default?

The 'set default device' is grayed out, however if I go into the 'device advanced settings' bit, and choose to separate all jacks as independent input devices I can make the mic at the back the default one, however, I can't get the microphone to pick up sounds.

Try updating the software. I know its worked before, should be no reason it shouldn't now.

Give it a go anyway and let me know if the ui changes as well as mine is different.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/

click the High Definition Audio Codecs (Software) and dl the os version.

I'm not on my PC now as it's 2:30 am here, but I'll do this tomorrow morning and let you know the result. Thanks

ok well keep trying at least until then. Try this, in the front audio panel, plug headphone in, you should now get a popup window to select device, see if mic is still there, and if it is select it then select something else like headphones, just to see
