Hello,

I am currently using a 430W power supply, a M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard, 12GB of RAM, and a 9800GTX PCIe 512MB DDR3 video card. I would like to get an upgrade for my video card. What can I get, particularly witih a 430w power supply (unless it would be wise to upgrade that to something bigger). Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Anything with a 6 pin PCI-E connector, like your current card, should be fine. What's your budget? I like the GTX 650 Ti Boost as a starting point, lower starts to have issues with games at 1080p Ultra.

If thats a cx 430 corsair power supply your good upto the 650 boost, MAYBE a gtx 760 but you would have to check. If it isnt a corsair you need a new one. (Tho I suspect it is because you have an old card in there that would have fried
most generic 430 watt psu's, if there is such a beast.

Thanks for responding!

The GTX 650 is PCIe 3.0, whereas my current card is a 2.0 and my board only supports 2.0 (here is the link to Asus' website with board specs: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A785TDV_EVO/#specifi...). From doing brief research, a 3.0 board plugged into a 2.0 slot won't cause any damage, but might experience a drop in performance. Do you have any insight into this potential issue?

I would say $150 would be about the max that I would want to spend. My computer is a patchwork deal that I add to whenever I have some extra (oooooooooooor not extra...) money. I've been scouring eBay for ones (even used) and found one that I bid on a few times: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EVGA-SuperClocked-012P31573KR-G...

I eagerly await your reply!

Hi Chris,

Thanks for replying! My existing power supply is a 430w thermaltake xp550np (part# w0070ru).

For efficiently running a high-end video card, motherboard, RAM and hopefully soon additional cooling fans (maybe even liquid cooled fans for the CPU and, if there is something for it, a liquid cooled fan for the video card), is there typically a need for a higher capacity power supply (600W? 800W?) Is there such a thing as overkill with PC power supplies?

I eagerly await your reply!
