I bought a ne Dell 8700, installed SSD, disconnected the HDD installed Windows 8 on the SSD and reconnected the HDD. Bios set for booting from SSD. I have only one drive with a letter and I think it is the HDD. Intel Rapid Storage software says the SSD is not the system drive but the HDD is the system drive.

Have you tried swapping the HDD and SSD drives (switching drive bays) to see if that makes a difference?

I am going to try switching SATA ports. Drive bays will not affect drives.
Coulf the problem be that Windows is loaded on both disks?

I should have said SATA connections instead of drive bays. Yes, having an OS on both drives could be a problem. Have you considered formatting the non-OS drive or do you have data on that drive that you want to keep? If you decide to format the second drive I would consider connecting it externally to another computer to perform the format.

the os should not be a big problem.
Swap ports and if the old drive is not assigned a letter go into disk management and assign it one there.

The problem was when I cloned the HDD to the SSD, it brought over the signature ID. So there was a signature collision, both drives had the same identifier and Windows could not handle that. I opened disk management and right clicked on the ! and selected ONLINE from the menu and the drive was recognized immediately. I did have to change drive letters on the HDD as it was assigned J: and I wanted D:
