Hi guys,
I want to buy a 7870 for my for my gaming rig. But before making the final decision I want to be sure that it is a good buy. In many discussions on this forum peoples are suggesting 7950. Again in some discussions they are suggesting 7870. It was like some fanboys were fighting.
Anyways can anyone tell me what would be better? And Why?
Thank you.

Well, the 7950 simply out performs the 7870 in alot of cases. If you have the money getting a 7950 and overclocking it would out perform a 7870 OC. It really comes down to budget, and that is where the arguments begin, obviously people are going to recommend a cheaper card if there is a budget.

Hi there,
First of all you need to tell us your primary resolution. This is the main factor when you are comparing 2 cards like 7870 and 7950

If it is possible that you can increase your budget by a margin and your motherboard supports NVIDIA series card, go for the GTX760, it outperforms the 7870 and go on par with the 7950. You can also OC it with GPU Boost 2.0, it is very decent. Else, a 7950 for gaming. 7870 is good when budget were tight but prices have significantly drop since.

Im saying with both overclocked it still out performs an overclocked 7870, as the 7870 runs in the GHz range out of the box, the 7950 does not.

The most important thing you need to tell us is what are the things you most want to be able to do with the new card? For example, my best friend likes to game on his PC, but his highest gaming priority is Company of Heroes 2. He doesn't care if he gets a few more or less frames per second in other games, but he wanted the absolute best bang for his buck in this one particular game, and he had a budget of not much more than $200. So looked it up and the 7870 performs within a couple of FPS of the 7950 in this game, and there are numerous specials on 7870s putting them around $205-$220. 7950s are going for around $270. There are some games where the 7950's extra shaders give you some extra performance, but you'll have to decide whether it's worth the extra $50-$60.

I have a Gigabyte 7950 myself, and love the card, but it's selling for $269. The Gigabyte 7870 is probably the best deal, as it comes factory overclocked to 1100MHz and it's selling in Canada for $214.99 from NCIX right now (there was even a one day door-crasher for this card a couple of days ago for $189.99, but you can't always be in the right place at the right time!).

If you don't need the 3GB memory on the 7950 (ie. you're not running eyefinity on 3 monitors) and/or you need to keep the price down below $230, the 7870 is a great card for the money, and probably the better deal right now.

Ok, in the battel of a 2gigs and 3gigs card, oviously the 3 gigs will win BUT only with resolutions above 1080. Since you have a monitor with 1600*900 resolution you are not going to see any performance difference. Belive me NOTHING !! In the case the extra 1 gigs will be useless and your extra 50$ too. And I’m telling this from my own experience. Not based on some benchmarks.

And yes if you are not planning to upgrade to a higher resolution within 5-6 years always go with a 7870 XT not the 7870 OC or Flex . 7870 XT is a great card. It is based on AMD’s Tahiti architecture with its 256-bit memory interface.
unlike the remainder of the HD 7800 series that uses the Pitcairn architecture.

Its has a more powerful cooler, less noisy, lots of room for overclocking and best for 1080 reso gaming. You can spend the extra 50$ to upgrade your system later.

Hope that helps.

A GTX670 is a much more expensive card than a 7870 and quite a bit more than a 7950. A quick check online shows they're going for ~$350. Ask yourself: do you want to spend $350? (GTX670) Or $270 (7950 or GTX760) or ~$210-$220 (7870)? If you were to consider the GTX670, you might as well buy the GTX760 anyhow for $80 less.

Not the GTX670, the GTX760(~$250) performs the same as the HD7950, less noise and heat from aftermarket coolers, less power consumption. You can read it here http://www.legitreviews.com/amd-radeon-hd-7950-w-boost-...
