Hey all,

I just purchased a Gigabyte GTX 770 OC, and I've decided to try overclocking it. It came with the "Gigabyte OC Guru II" overclocking software.

Before I get started, I'd like to know how much I should try to overclock. I know absolutely nothing about this. I do not want to accidentally ruin my card.

How much should I OC my GPU clock (base is 1137 MHz), and how much should I OC my memory clock (it's at 7010 MHz right now)?

What do you guys suggest I do?

You probably won't get much out of it since those are very high for base clocks. Use Afterburner or EVGA Precision (those two are just reskins of each other, and the best), put the power limit as high as it will let you, the voltage as high as it will let you, temperature limit as high as it will go (and tick the box to prioritize temperature).

From there, bump up the clocks a bit, run a stress testing program like Unigine Valley, if it runs through without any artifacting (red dots, weird lines etc) then keep increasing the clocks. Once you start seeing these, or get the card to crash (total blackout of the screen), you've gone too far and need to back off to the last successful settings. Once thats done, let it run for an hour or so, if it doesn't crash you are golden.

Also keep an eye on temperatures, under 80C is ideal, under 90C is safe.

I've tried some mild overclocking, and while my temps have stayed the same, I have noticed a strange squealing noise coming from my GPU while gaming. Is this normal?

It's called coil whine. Under load its common, unless it bothers you just keep it. If it does it at idle (browsing the internet or sitting at the desktop) return it.

One last question.

I'm using a 600watt PSU. Is this enough power to allow OCing?

Also, while I have not experienced any artifacts, I have had my game and benchmark tool crash a few times. I assume this means I'm overclocking too high?

Is it possible that my crashing was due to insufficient power supply? I had not reached what I was told to be maximum for my GPU OC...

I'm using an overclocked 780 on a 520W PSU, provided its a good 600W it's not the issue. The new drivers are crap at the minute, thats probably why.

It's a Corsair CX600.

How would I know if my PSU isn't sufficient? Would my game simply crash, or would my entire computer crash?

It's plenty sufficient.

If it wasn't computer would just turn off under load, then reboot.

I've noticed that my temps without OC seem to be about 4c higher than they were before I ever OC. Is this normal?

Within margin of error for game and ambient temperature variation.

What are signs of damage from overclocking? Does the card decrease in performance?
