Windows 7 OS Reinstall after reformatting

I would like to completely wipe my hard drive by reformatting but my windows 7 was a download and I was given a product key. How can I wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows 7 with my original product key.

Make a partition on the HDD, let's say D and save there the downloaded Windows.
Make a bootable USB drive and save on it the Windows 7 files. Write somewhere the key for using it when asked.
Boot from the USB, format the C partition and continue installing on the C partition. The D one will remain intact.
