So I am building a computer for a family member, the specs are as follows.

A960M-M3 mobo
8gb Ram
Amd Athlon II X2 270
Gigabyte Nvidia GT 630 2gb ram

I installed windows 8 on this machine, using the Integrated Hd3000 graphics, because the gt 630 would not display a picture, instead it would just "lock up" at pre-boot gray screen....

So I got that all installed, drivers for mobo etc...

Card would still not work, So I took it out, placed it in My personal gaming machine, worked perfect.

took my 550ti and placed it in my family members computer, and it worked perfect..

The only difference between these two cards (Aside from the quality)is the fact my 550ti needs a power source into it.

Okay so I figured maybe its just the Onboard, but I personally wouldn't know what to do from here, but why would the 550ti boot and this one not?

SO I started changing ram around and seeing if it was just something else..

well I noticed in windows, it says 8.00Gb installed, 3.74GB available.

Im wondering whats going on here... the ram isn't bad (it too works fine in my gaming machine, fully recognized)

Any suggestions on how to get this pc to recognize this GT630 and boot up properly?

That makes me figure that probably what happens is that you've got a cruddy (or failing) motherboard which isn't able to provide enough power through the PCIe slot to run that card - the 550ti gets around it by drawing enough power through it's external connection that it doesn't have to draw as much through the slot.

No guarantees on that, especially because AsRock makes...

Oh, wait, I just googled that ... it's an ECS board? I can pretty much guarantee that's what's going on, then.

I do not know the answer about your graphics card. But for the ram I may be able to help. Is your family member's computer running on 32-bit or 64-bit windows. On 32-bit the most ram your computer can use is about 4 gigs which would explain why you are only getting use of 3.74GB.

After reading some reviews on new egg, I can see you are not the first with this gpu issue. Some people were having the same issue with their 9800GTX, 260GTX, 8800gt. It looks like they might have fixed it with a bios update. I would suggest updating your bios then seeing if the card will run.

Good call on the RAM, I missed that.

As for the GPU issue, this is a 630 we're talking about - that's (as far as the BIOS is concerned) a very new card, and I would be shocked if there even were a bios update for it, much less one that fixed a problem cards had six, seven years ago.

Your probably right, but it's worth a shot.

It is 100% in fact, a 64bit installation of windows 8, I Flashed the bios to the newest version, Ill try reinstalling the Mobo drivers see if maybe that will solve the problem

(and to my surprise there was a 2013 update for the Bios)

I'm actually very surprised that there was an update to the BIOS - I take back my scorn for vapaad. Try that and see how it works.

As for windows 8, any chance I could get a screenshot of the memory option under the performance tab of your task manager?
