Ok so I am getting ready for FFXIV. I do the benchmark and my computer scores rather low. Which is ok for me but I discover that I had a unused amazon gift card with like 70 dollars on it, and I have decided to use it to update my computer a little bit.

my computer has 10 gbs of ram
amd 6 core processor fx6120 3.5 ghz
terabyte hard drive
and a amd hd 7450 gpu

I decided between getting either a radeon hd 7750 or a radeon hd 7550. But then I was informed of the mystical power supply.

I am rather uneducated when it comes to the power supply, so when I cracked my pc open to look at it, I saw some very weird numbers. lots of v's and w's and im not sure which is the number im looking for.

anyhow, the power supply is apparently a DPS-300AB-73 A,
and the largest numbers I saw was a 103 W max, a 300 W max at 25 degrees C and a 260 W max at 50 degrees C.

can anyone inform me what this means? will I have to get a new power supply? or will this one be enough to power either of the gpus I saw? thank you for your help!

well since your buying a 7750 i don't think you will need a new one. its not a heavy power consuming card. it will use 65W at max.

and the V's and W's you saw are voltage and Watt's (and amper's which you probably didn't see) the power supply supplies .

that's the thing i'm worried about though, since I am unsure of how much wattage this power supply actually puts out, i'm unsure if it will be able to supply it the power it needs.

by the looks of thing's i think it supplies about 400W at 25C and 360W at 50C, and from the looks of it it seems like a generic low quality one. but still normal PC isn't a power house, depending on the processor it can take 150-200W in lower medium performance gaming rig's.

since your's is an FX 6120 which has a max TDP of 95W, lets assume it uses 80W of power(ive heard somewhere the CPU doesn't utilize 100% of its TDP). and with the 7750, another 50W here (same case here). so that's about 130W other peripheral's will add another 20-30W so it should take around 200-210W.

so even if your PSU is a cheap quality one which doesn't actually supply its real output, your still fine. even if its a 300W with a 400W sticker you should still have plenty of power you need. but just to be sure, if you can send a picture of the side of the PSU, the sticker where its output's and all the voltages amperes and watts are posted it would help us more.

Hi - take another look - the key power spec is the amps avail on the +12v rail(s),
plz find that info n post it here.

ok I'm back, thank you all for your help thus far. to answer the questions above, I lack a camera, but i'll detail what I see to my best.
____
+12 Va - - - 12A

___
+12 Vb - - - 18A
___
+5.08 V - - - 13A _______
___ |----------- Total 103 W max.
+3.3 V - - - 12 a _______|
___
+5.08 Vsb - - - 2A

max power 300W at 25 degC

max power 260 W at 50 degC

edit: crap, I expected most of the solid lines to be over the 3 dashes

Hi - no problem - you are good to go with a 7750 or 7770, more than enough +12v amps.
The +12v rails is where your CPU & GPU draw the current from.

The 7770 requires a pcie connector, the 7750 needs only the power from the slot on the mobo.

Going with a 7750, you won't have to be using a molex to pcie adapter.

thank you for the quick response! so i'm all good to go then? just need to decide between the 7750 and the 7770. I've look at amazon and newegg and they both appear to be roughly the same price. which variant of either card would you recommend?

My personal bias is Sapphire because of the good luck I've had with mine. Performance is
going to be indistinguishable amongst the brands, check the mfg warranty, and go with the
best. Sapphire, Asus, Powercolor, MSI all appear to have good user satisfaction. On Newegg they
are selling a lot more Sapphire 7750's than the other brands.

so just to double check everything, a sapphire hd 7770 should be able to run games fine with my set up?
I know in the future I should get a larger power supply, but I can get that in the coming months.

Yes, you need to get a molex to pcie adapter is the hd7770 doesn't include one in the box. should be
less than $5.

One other thing before you purch the 7770 - plz dbl check the +12v readings you posted,
+12va = 12a, +12vb = 18a. Plz confirm. They won't actually have the tot of 30a,
but you need 19. So, as long as they read the way you listed above you'll be OK.
