Lets make this short and sweet. I am a teen who has played video games on a console his ENTIRE LIFE. I bought a gaming PC and I'm liking it so far. It's just that i'm really really bad. I already posted a question similar to this but I need to work this out. It's been almost a week and I am constantly messing up the keys. I don't know what to do. I would say that I am not bad at video games usually but on PC I am. Do any of you PC gamers have any advice for me that would be great. Thanks.

The inspirational part was said to Myamoto Musashi at his martial arts school.
It was said to Gitchin Funakoshi by his karate Master.
Funakoshi said it to Masutatsu Oyama when he was 12.
It was said by every expert martial artist to his students who ever lived and it was said to me by a Kyokushinkai 6th dan (shihan) karate teacher in 1982, after I had been training 3 nights a week for a year.
So, I am glad you get the point.
Read it every day and apply it to all things and you will be treading in the footsteps of some of history's greatest names. Feel free to find out who they were.
And change the key mapping to suit your fingers. Lower left hand keys are awkward, try to move them to Q and tab.
Are you saying that using the keyboard is awkward for you? It can be at first. That is just a matter of getting used to it. I haven't played a game with a controller in years. Now when I try I can't handle moving the camera with a stick. It's really awkward for me. It's all a matter of getting used to it. Spend some more time with it and you will get used to it.

How long do you think it will take. Also since you are a PC gamer how long did it take you?

I started playing half life on a pc in 1999, and I was able to go back to it and finish the game on normal settings without cheating in 2006 , but I am 3 times your age. I would say you will be getting the hang of it after 3 months but improving for many years.
My pal Dennis' mum can finish every game there ever was and she is 70.
She has finished Portal, and I cant. At least, I havent been enthused enough yet. How long? How long to become a master of anything?
It is a personal experience that depends on your enthusiasm, dedication and resolve.
I would not go back to a controller, but I CAN tell you, all my buddies respect the fact I can play games on a keyboard and they cant.
It says something about your character . .

It just takes a little time, try starting on a first person shooter that doesn't have too much going on. I started with counter strike a long time ago, it's a true pure fps with out all the glam and different commands to get you messed up. Eventually your hand will naturally go to the WASD keys even while not playing games, that's when you know you have made it.

I'm going to be honest that was probably the most inspirational, most well said thing I have ever read in my life. I am going to write that down and read it every single day. That was insane.

Just stick with it Jcor. Don't be afraid to change the key mapping. I do in almost every game I play. If you want to know what I use for key layout I could let you know. The most awkward controls I found so far were in Deadlight. You have to Hold D+Shift to run to the right and press ctrl to slide. How are you supposed to manage that all with one hand? If something seems uncomfortable play around with the mapping until you like it.

Thank you so much for the advice. I swear this site needs a send friend request option. Do you play call of duty or battlefield? It would be cool to know what keys you use on fps games.

I very rarely play those games. Lately it's been Payday 2 and Killing Floor. Anyway, generally I do wasd for movement, space jump, ctrl is toggle crouch, f melee, g grenade, e interact, r reload, t for flashlight/attachment/whatever, mouse button 4 (button on the left side) push to talk for mic, shift run. It's all pretty standard except the mic button is always something awful by default, melee and interact are different for every game so in payday 2 I found myself meleeing people on accident at first.
