My desktop recently died in a move a week or so ago and I am looking to try to get by using my current laptop as my CS:GO machine. Its really the only thing I use it for and I dont use it often, maybe 2-3x a week for a match or 2, but the current setup is unbearable and unplayable under most circumstances.

Laptop is an Alienware M11x-r1 factory OCed to 1.7ghz with GT335M GPU lightly OCed. Machine is 3+ years old and has worked pretty well for whatever I wanted to do with it, but lags pretty terribly on lowest graphics settings and has awful FPS all the time (10-14). When I ran the Windows Experience Index on the computer, the CPU was the bottle neck by a long shot (4.9 processing rating vs 6.4 video/graphics and gaming rating), which makes me think the video card is likely alright but the processor just cant handle the data.

Screen is an Asus 24" 720.

I currently have it hooked up with an HDMI cable.
Question 1: Would moving from an HDMI cable to a VGA cable minimize the load on the processor/video card? I use headphones and dont need the sound signal to get to the monitor.

Would wiping the machine clean and starting with a fresh install help at all?

Is there any other way to increase my performance from the machine to allow me to play on my current laptop?

Am I stuck with this until I put the cash down to buy a new desktop?

1: No difference

2: Most likely no

3: Overclocking is the only way, but I doubt you have much headroom due to heat.

You are most likely stuck with it until you get the cash. Even that gpu is pretty weak. For now just make sure you turn everything all the way down to get the best fps you can and turn off every program you don't need so Steam is the only thing running in the background.
