IDE HDD drive does not show in ATA bios boot

Have finished build on Asus Z87 mobo.. my 128 gb SSD is Win 7 o/s boot drive and SATA HDD the storage drive. Want to recover files and programs from my old XP IDE HDD and am using a Vantech IDE to SATA adapter and cable. When I attach it to the board the IDE drive (Master jumpers) does not show in disk management. Does it need to be set to slave or c/s ? Since it is not on an IDE ribbon don't understand why it would need to be. Any suggestions other than a external HD?

Remove the jumpers from HDD and try again. Good luck.

jumper usually has to be on, typically master if that doesn't work try slave and then CS. or whatever the hdd label says is for single mode.

You did supply power to the hdd and to this adapter right?

FWIW, the following user guide states that the HDD needs to be jumpered as master.

Yes, power and data cables are attached.. HDD spins up and continues to run until I shut down and unplug it.. Jumper is set to Master

The adapter could be faulty. Can it be seen on BIOS ?

No, and it's not designed to be seen.. just a plastic block with internal connectors that plug into the back of the IDE HDD where the ribbon cable would normally go, and a SATA cable plugs into it and the board. It has an onboard 4-prong plug power connection.

Just an update, I bought 2 of these and I did swap them to rule out the first being defective. Same result with both.

I think you misunderstood my question. I am talking about the IDE HDD, if by any chance can you see it in BIOS as a IDE/PATA HDD !!!! Sometimes those PATA to SATA adapters or vise-versa don't work, and it could destroy the HDD.

OK, looks like part of problem is solved.. the new SATA cable that came with the adapter was faulty. Replaced it with a different new one from parts box and apparently the IDE/PATA HDD is attemptng to be recognized.

Only question that I can think of before I allow it to load.. the IDE/PATA drive has an old copy of XP on Part C: . Most of the data that I need to recover is on several other partitions. Will XP interfere with my newly installed Win 7?

Thanks to everyone for the input. Eliminating some hardware allowed me to focus on what was the real issue.

Make the IDE HDD as a second drive (in boot order menu in BIOS) and it will not interfere with WIN 7.
