Hello, i was thinking in installing an SSD for my OS and a couple of games, but reading in the web i found that SSD are better used with AHCI.

Im not exactly sure what that mean, but right now i have my OS and everything else in a RAID0 with 2 samsung f3 spinpoint 1GB each. To do that i had to set the BIOS options for RAID, and if i change that setting the raid 0 doesn´t work.

I will like to use the SSD for OS and games, but i want to keep mi raid0 for everything else.

Is it possible to set the SSD to AHCI and the HDDs to raid0?

Im using a ASUS rampage III formula MB, i7 960, 6GB DDR3, win8.

i want to do a clean install so i'll erase everything from the HDDs.

Also the MB includes 2 sata 6.0 Gb/s connectors, is it possible to connect tha SSD to these connectors and use it for the OS?

any advice??

Thank you!!!

On the Intel PCH storage controller (the one built into the chipset), RAID mode is actually AHCI + RAID module. RAID member disks will be exposed using Intel's firmware RAID module while non-member disks iwll be exposed using AHCI.

On what Pinhedd stated.
1) He is correct in that you can now set the BIOS to raid and as Long as the SSD is NOT a member drive of a raid set, TRIM will be based by the Intel driver.
2) Not sure if that was with Version 10.6 or if Intel incorporated that with 11.x.
3) Just for Info, With Latest Intel RST driver and Z77/87 Chipsets, TRIM will be based to SSD even if SSDs are part of a raid0, or 1, set.

IMPORTANT: make sure you disconnect your two HDDs so that ONLY the SSD is attached (Reattach HDDs after Win Install.
.. May Need to down load the "F6" driver and select custom install and check the Box "have driver"

Yes, I have a SSD and 4xhdds in raid-10 all running of the motherboards main sata connections. Put into raid mode and the SSD will default back to AHCI.

Ok, looks like i did something wrong.

It is working, i could install win 8 on the ssd and the Raid 0 is working on 2 other HDDs, also i have another 2 HDD Western Digital and they are not part of the raid 0. But the SSD is in IDE, not RAID nor AHCI.

i think that the problem may be with the controller of the sata 6Gb port, its Marvell, not Intel. It showed an Exclamation mark on device manager because it wasnt updated, i searched the asus website and found an update for win 7, i installed it in win8 using compatibility mode and seems all right.

But the SSD is in IDE.

I noticed that if i go into the Raid setup in BIOS (Ctrl + I when power on) the SSD is not listed in the hard drives available for raid 0.

Any ideas??

PS. i did disconnect all the HDDs during OS setup, except SSD of course. Also i set the Sata as Raid before OS install.
My MB is an asus Rampage III formula socket 1366.

I think your MB only has two SATA III (6 GB/s) ports and they are controlled by the Marvel Controller, which is a poor choice for Sata III SSDs. I would prefer to use the Sata II Intel ports.
Yes it will Knock down the Sequencial performance, but this is NOT a Biggy any way as it is the random small 4 K file performance that is important for an OS + Program drive. Move Your single HDDs to the marvel port.
