I currently have a GeForce 9800 GT and according to nvida it needs at least a 400 wat power supply. The graphics card is always overheating during games ( 90c + ) and is definitely too hot on idle. I applied thermal paste to it and cleaned the fan out which helped slightly but nothing noticeable. Will changing too a 400 wat power supply fix this? Note I did not build the computer myself it was bought off a friend

No i would invest in a new graphics card

The power supply supplies the required power that the gpu needs to run. if it draws 200 watts from a 500 watt psu, then it will also overheat on a 400 watt psu

I had a similar problem when I added a 9600GT to my Dell a few years back. The Dell only had a 250W PSU, so it couldn't drive the card properly, card ran hot all the time and caused artifacts, lock-ups and crashes. A new PSU should do the trick for you.

Case cooling is fairly bad there is only space for one fan on the back and it does not work great
