i cleaned my computer and was hooking every thing back up; i was in the process of plugging in the power supply cable when i accidently hit the power switch in the back and heard a static shock noise. i know i fried something but would it just be the psu or the mobo too. when i try to turn it on it all turns on for about half a second then shuts off like all the leds and fans start up then bam shuts off.

This is always tricky because you probably handled nearly every component. It may be your PSU is shutting down to protect your other components(working as intended). Best way is to re-trace your steps and assume nothing. The switch on your PSU being tunred On while connecting your AC most likely did not harm anything at all. Look to your other components.

turn the pc on then off at the wall or psu then hit the pcs power button at the front. the pc should start up and imediatly shut down... you have just cleaned out the residual current in the system... turn the power back on at the wall hit the front power and hope your pc boots.

i got the startup and instant shut down but nothing after that lol so does this mean the psu is shot or the mobo?

would the p8z 68-v le mother board let the ram surge during a power surge. i didnt it would; i thought the mother board prevented power surges like that? but ill try taking the mother board out and running a single ram stick later tonight to see if i get any thing, but is there a way to test a power support see if it working properly with out taking out the mother board at the moment? i heard some times a mother board can cause a short when its fastened to the wall to much someone said inserting a piece of cardboard behind the mother board would prevent this from occurring but that doesn't sound safe to me.

all i did during the cleaning was take out the video card and blew out the dust on the gpu cooler and put back in. so nothing else was fiddle with i removed the video card to see if it would work with the just the integrated graphics but same thing.

sounds like you may have damaged 1 or more components. all you can do is test them individually in another build if you have 1, if not ask a neighbor or a friend to allow you to test your parts in there system.
it may also be the psu's surge protector kicking in if you killed the psu so trying another 1 in your build would be a good first step.

There are a good number of protection circuits built into today's power supplies including over-voltage/under-voltage & over-current etc... that will usually curb the downstream effects of a "surge". The single RAM test can help identify a bad slot on the motherboard as much as a bad RAM module. Maybe the north-bridge chipset is toast on the motherboard. =/

can anyone suggest a good mobo from futureshop.ca(around 100$ maybe a little more) that will fit the i7-2600. i tried all ram slots single ram stick and all rams sticks single; still no boot up. tried running just mobo and power supply with one stick of ram same thing. i also would like to thank you guys for all your help. o i just thought of something could my cpu have fried?

to test if the cpu is deat you will need to connect the monitor and turn it on without the pc being on. you should see no signal and then after 10 seconds or so the monitor should go into stanby...
turn the monitor off and on again and this time when you see no signal turn the power on for the pc... if the monitor immediately jumps into standby without waiting the full 10 seconds its very likely your cpu is dead... (it could still be a dead cpu socket but most of the time this test will correctly diagnose a dead cpu).

if it takes the normal time to go into standby then the cpu should be fine.

I suppose it is possible but I think it is more likely your motherboard. Are you looking for a mini-atx board? the options for under $100 are slim.

or for mini atx at $129 - http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/asus-asus-p8q77-m-csm-lga-1155-motherboard-p8q77-m-csm/10236213.aspx?path=dde8d05440dafa11fb8d29ed06a52b58en02&SearchPageIndex=4

you want socket 1155.... then choose asus/gigabyte/asrock or whatever your flavor is.

well i went and got a new mobo and now i got a new problem everything inside is running but it doesnt seem to display any video and my keyboard and mouse dont seem to be lighting up, now what could be the problem?

make sure you have connected the usb headers correctly... if your using the front panel. does your motherboard have a digital panel that shows 2 characters or a speaker that produces beeps. if the gfx failed you should hear a beep sequence.
make sure you try both the output on the gfx card and the output from the motherboard as 1 may be disabled and your connected to it.
