No a Xeon is a bad idea if you want to play in Ultra mode. Games don't rely on the CPU as much as they used to, and don't take advantage of the extra cores or threads a Xeon provides, so overpaying just for a gaming rig is a very bad idea. You have to keep in mind that to get the most of a Xeon you need a motherboard that costs twice as much as regular boards, and slower, more expensive ECC RAM. Home Server isn't that great either, and it's a gigantic pain to get setup and working properly.

What do you plan to use this rig for? If it's gaming you do not need to purchase socket LGA 2011, let alone a Xeon E5, you're just throwing money away. Plus with a Xeon you have to purchase much slower, far more expensive ECC RAM, and more expensive workstation specific motherboards, and that's something those CPU benchmark blogs don't tell you.

Mi7agent1,

I'm a big fan of LGA 2011 too as it accommodates a wider range of CPU's than any socket I can think of, up to the new 12-core Xeon E5-2697, so upgrading can be extreme- from $250 to $3,200 CPU's. The LGA 2011 CPU's have twice the memory bandwidth of i5's, i7 Haswell, and Xeon E3's (51.6Gb/s as compared to 25.6), more cache, and I like that there's no integrated graphics. In Haswell, the IG can take up to 25% of the CPU.

If you're set on LGA 2011 and a Xeon E5, the cheapest is probably the E5-2603 for £190, but that is only 1.8GHz, a lazy server CPU. The best cost / performance model is the E5-1620, quad-core, 3.6 / 3.8GHz with 10MB cache, an OEM/tray CPU. The 3.6GHz has the highest base clock speed of E5's and is not extremely expensive £269.61 at amazon UK>

If you can buy from the US, it's only $290- £187 - about the same cost as the 1.8GHz in the UK>

If you are doing renderings and can use all the cores, that would suggest the E5-1650 six-core 3.2 / 3.8 > £518.12

There are some very good motherboards for this that are also good performers for the cost, like the ASRock Extreme 3 > £144.98 at Amazon.

"Looking to spend 350 for motherboard and cpu buy the way"

Mi7agent1,

By "350", I'm assuming you mean Quid.

To have the best gear at the lowest cost would be if you are able to buy from a US source. In the UK, the E5-1620 is £270 and the board is £145 (£415 / $646 ), but in the US, the E5-1620 is about $290 and the ASRock Extreme 3 is $200>

> and $490 equals £250.

If you have to buy in the UK, the only alternatives will be to buy a slower CPU or consider a used one off Ebay UK, but a quick look there seems to be a similar situation of what it costs in Dollars in the US costs Pounds in the UK.

Here's a really good one on Ebay US >

> which is a 3GHz quad core E5-2643 for $150 Buy It Now.

> which is a "New other" E5-1620 3.6Ghz for $250.

It would help if you would be more specific about your uses, as g-unit1111 also asks, because the performance level is of course tied to the price. Xeons can become expensive at relatively modest speeds, and the speed drops as the number of cores increases. If you're doing renderings, you will want a 6-core even if slightly slower for example.
