Because VAT in the UK is higher.
I think VAT in the US is like 5%, whereas it's 20% here in the UK.

The US has no value added tax (VAT), which runs close to 20% in many countries. Sales tax in the US (6-9% range) is often not charged on Internet sales, although that is changing but does not show up until you get the item in your basket.

Our tax is a joke. Our politicians are thieving, money-grabbing b**tards, the lot of 'em.

The US is the most indebted country on Earth (believe it or not), yet they still have lower tax than us.

EDIT: The USA has a national debt of $70trillion, if this interests anyone. In contrast, the UK's national debt is around £1.4trillion, which is nothing compared to the debt of the US.

It's embarrassing really, considering we used to run the largest Empire in history (taboo?). Now we're just a nation of penniless people, lead by a smug jackass and his pals.

The US borrow money from other countries and their own banks. I don't really fully understand how it works, but the bottom line is that for the Government to repay it's borrowing, it needs to increase taxes, I believe. This is why such a low VAT in the US is admirable - you're in more debt than us Brits, but keep your VAT nice and low.

Of course, keeping tax low probably isn't great for the people in the long run, but nobody likes tax. :sarcastic:

EDIT: Apparently 7.5% of the debt is owed to China. Dunno about the rest.

Actually we have no value added tax or any kind of federal sales tax, the 6-9% sales tax at the register goes to the states and cities.

IMO our real problem is not the income tax rate (I'm in the 40% rate plus 7.65% for social security taxes) -- our government spends too much and is incredibly wasteful, the Middle East wars have cost trillions that was all borrowed.

HERE is a list of our creditors with China and Japan at the top. But even you Brits loan us money so we can spend like drunken sailors.
