Possible stupid question about computer storage.

So, I'm building myself my first gaming rig and I've been wondering about the hard drive. Would it be disadvantageous to use an external hard drive? Like have an external 2-3TB hard drive outside the desktop but also have like a 256GB SSD inside? would that work? It may be a stupid question but I was just starting to wonder if that would work.

It wouldnt be a bad choice, but I would say that internal HDD and an SSD is the better choice. Internal drives are faster for the most part, and its also safer and gives faster data transfer. A 1-2TB hdd with a 128-256 SDD depending on price is what I would recommend.
