Hello,
So I recently had an issue with my external hard drive where I could not edit any of the files on it and I could not delete anything. I could still run the files and copy them, but nothing else.
So I tried to fix this by taking full ownership of the drive and granting full permissions, but that did absolutely nothing, so (I believe) I undid it.
Then I tried to run a checkdisk, but it said the drive was in use, so it said it needed to unmount it, which I tried to let it do, but afterwards the chkdsk window just disappeared. I tried to do this over for a while and nothing changed.
Eventually I looked up how to unmount a hard drive and it involved running compmgmt.msc, and unmounting it from there. I tried doing that and remounting it, and that essentially led to the hard drive apparently completely dying with everything I had on it gone and it needs to be reformatted.
My overall question is, at some point during this process, when I look in My Computer, the hard drive that is labeled as the "Local Disk" was changed from my C drive to this screwed up external hard drive. I'm assuming this is something I really need to get fixed, and I have no idea how.
Unplugging the hard drive does not fix it. If I try to plug the hard drive into another computer it doesn't even recognize it.
And yes, I tried turning off, and unplugging the hard drive to fix the initial issue to no result.
Please let me know if you have any idea how to fix this final issue.
Regards,
Michael
