Apply additional thermal paste on an intel i7 4770k or not?

Hello all,

I just assembled my new computer and I am quite happy about it. But right after powering it on and going into the BIOS I remembered that I did not apply any heat paste like I had done 4 years ago in my last build.

The intel i7 4770k came with a stock heat sink that seemed to have a layer of something that looked like pre-applied heat paste on its rear side so perhaps there is no need to apply anything further.

At the moment I don't plan on overlocking it right from the start. When I do I will probably go for some after-market cooling and then I will have to get the heat paste I suppose.

So my question is this. Should I go and buy heat paste and apply it between the stock heat sink/fan and the cpu slot or will that not be needed at this point?

Thanks!

You do not need to buy/apply another layer of thermal paste until the time you buy an after-market cooler/heatsink. The intel stock heatsink comes pre-installed with some thermal paste. It is sufficient if you are not going to overclock at this point. Even if you were going to overclock, the stock heatsink won't be able to handle more than say, a modest 4.0ghz overclock.
