I recently installed a new CPU in my pc (intel 2 quad q9400 )

Asus p5b motherboard
intel core 2 quad q9400 2.66ghz
2gig ram.
nvidia 9800GT

Before I installed the CPU i flashed the bios (too 2104) because the bios version was not supporting it yet, it all went great.

Except for the booting part.

First it wouldnt boot at all (well, the fans went on etc but no POST beeps and screen), turned of the pc again, removed the power cable for about 20 secs, turned it on again and i heard the POST message, it was normal. After the ASUS screen i heard another beep and the following screen popped up

"Overclocking failed" Press F1 to enter setup or F2 to load up defaults (second hand cpu, looked in the bios and its running on 2133mhz...so its a downclock?xD)

By pressing F2 my computer will start normally. But the CPU runs idle at 1600Mhz ( i read something about speedstep ), but in stressed mode only at 2133mhz... Bus speed at 266mhz (wich is not right ??)

Well here's a pic.

Funny thing is, i cant change anything in the bios because when i change settings and i save and exit, my computer will not boot up and it will automatically reset the bios settings anyway otherwise i wont get past the "overclocking failed" screen.

I also removed the CMOS battery a few times (even bought a new one).

Any help, guys?
(I am not a grandmaster in English, and ofcourse pc's).

Simply reset the BIOS on the motherboard. There should be a reset jumper near the watch battery that says CLR_CMOS or something like that. Jump the jumper for a good 30sec or so to clear things out, then go into BIOS and make sure that it has picked the right voltages and settings for your CPU.

This motherboard originally supported only 1066 rated FSB. This means that to get it to support 1333MHz CPUs they had to make a BIOS that will automatically set overclock parameters, so everything runs at higher speed.

Problem probably lies somewhere in automatically adjusted OC settings, thus the message when booting and default reset to 1066MHz FSB. Apparently, you have to set this youself to get it to work.

Go to BIOS and do the following:
Set CPU voltage to the rated voltage of your CPU. Check its current voltage in CPU-Z or use VID voltage as displayed for example in CoreTemp.
Set Bus Speed to 333MHz and multiplier to 8. Disable temporarily c1e to disable speedstep.
Changing FSB to 333MHz will automatically overclock your memory. Use correct divider to set them as nearly as possible to stock settings (DDR2 800 etc). Set all the main timings and voltage manually. So they are like 4-4-4-12 @ 2.5V. You can check timings and voltage in CPU-Z SPD tab.

This should do for the start. If not you will have to play with north and southbrigde voltages.

If you need detailed instructions ask.

I dug around and did a little more research, and I think the CPU is simply not compatable with your mobo.
Mobo Website says that you are running on a P965 chipset: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5B/#specifications
According to the Intel ARK the Q9000 series chips do not work with that chipset: http://ark.intel.com/products/35428/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9650-12M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

In fact, the only quad core chips that will work are 2 generations older in the Q6000 series: http://ark.intel.com/products/30790/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q6700-8M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB

That means that the only 2 quad cores that will work are the Q6600 or the Q6700

I cleared the CMOS and that didn't change anything.

So I just have to get a different motherboard?? Or do i have to try what Bejusek said?

Already have the latest BIOS installed

Core 2 Quad Q9400 (rev.R0,2.66GHz,1333FSB,L2:6MB) ALL 2001 GO beta support FSB1333 CPU. you also tried 2001?

In fact I have 2001 bios version now, already tried 2104 yesterday. :p

the timings for ddr2-800 are 5.5.5.18 1.8V, 4.4.4.12 are for oc versions, and they are not 2.5V, they go up 2.1-2.35V max. read the manufacturers specification.

This was just an example... I wrote that he needs to check them as specified in SPD...
But the DDR2 default voltage is indeed 1.8V. I mixed it up with DDR voltage.

Timings could be 1-1-1-1 if the modules were specified that way. This has nothing to do with overclocking.

Its kinda hard to getting in to the bios because i have to unplug the power first to actually get a post message, but in the BIOS the FSB was already set on 333 (havent changed it to that)

So I have done this:

Set Bus Speed to 333MHz and multiplier to 8. Disable temporarily c1e to disable speedstep.
Changing FSB to 333MHz will automatically overclock your memory. Use correct divider to set them as nearly as possible to stock settings (DDR2 800 etc).

But i dont get the part of voltages, they are all on auto

brb gonna make a pic of bios

I am sure I did it wrong ;P

Anyways.. Everytime I push F10 to save changes and exit my pc will restart, but then wont boot. (except when i take off the power, i really have said this too often xD)

CPU vCORE - WRONG! It's set to extreme level. Change it immediately to auto now. What is your CPU VID? Check it in CoreTemp.

Same with NB voltage!

Edit:

Configure advanced CPU settings page, all settings are ok.

System Freq/Voltage:
CPU freq 333 - ok.
DRAM Freq 1333 - Wrong. Have you checked your memory specification in cpu-z SPD tab?
It should be as close to 800MHz as possible. Maybe a little faster if you have 1066MHz modules.
PCI Express freq - auto should be ok, but just to be sure set it to 100MHz.
CPU VCore voltage - set it according to your CPU VID. You will find it in CoreTemp.
FSB termination - set to auto
NB VCore - set to auto

DDR timing are in advanced -> chipset -> northbridge configuration.
You can try it on auto, but it would be best to set it manually. If you can, please post a CPU-Z SPD tab screenshot. Or at least your exact memory model.

Edit2:
It won't boot because OC settings are wrong. Patience, we will make it work.

Dont worry bejusek the bios didnt save anything of that. So it didnt even run on those voltages

These are 667MHz sticks.
Then in BIOS, when setting DRAM Frequency aim for 667MHz.
Memory Voltage set to 1.8V.
You can set timings manually to 5-5-5-15 (as per JEDEC #3) or leave them on auto for time-being.

Edit:
BIOS should allow setting DRAM Frequency to 667. With 333MHz FSB it's a 1:1 FSB : DRAM ratio, by far one of the most popular.

Changed all the settings in bios. Fsb 333 dram freq 667 and all the other things you mentioned. Saved and exit. Pc restarts. Black screen again amd no post message :/. Will be on tonight gotta work now hope I missed out something so i can fix it tonight.

Your help is very much appreciated

Well, I am certain it is possible to get it working at 333 FSB.
You could give it a try with the newest BIOS possible (2104).
Next thing to do is to play with voltages - raise a little NB and ICH chipset voltages.
Let's hope this is not a FSB gap, because with your memory we can't really raise it much more :(
Let us know when you're back.
