Xeon or i5 for workstation?

Pretty straightforward question - just wondering which cpu would be best in an otherwise similar build used mainly for rendering/editing. They're pretty much identical in price, and the Xeon seems to be a little better (basically an i7 at an i5 price). Is that assumption correct, or am I missing something?

If this is for an actual workstation, to include using ECC memory, then the Xeon is the better choice. Keep in mind, Xeon's are locked processors so overclocking (like for improved gaming performance) is difficult, if not impossible. You also have to make sure your desired motherboard can support a Xeon.

If this is really a general purpose machine (that also does some workstation like duties), going with the i5 and the cheaper non-ECC memory and motherboard may be your best bet.

It is really a matter of requirements vs. "desirements" and how you will actually use the system.
