Ok I want to have a server PC and I want win 8 pro on my everyday PC. Do I need 2 separate OS's to run a server PC? or can I install win 8 on both without any kind of infringement, when all I want is for my other PC to be a simple server for my laptop, everyday pc and connect to the rest of my electronic goodies? If you haven't guessed I am a newb when it comes to building a server/network for home use kind of thing. I just don't know what my options are or what would be best to do this thing right and without infringing on any kind of big no-no kind of ground. It's probably simpler than I think or its more difficult, I just like to know what Im going to be getting myself into and how to appropriately handle the project. Would linux be a good choice for a server OS? Would it be friendly to the windows PC's? I might be missing something that I can do Im up for any suggestions and/or critiques of my plan. Thanks in advance for anyone/everyone who replies.

Sorry I thought I had posted what I wanted it to do. Basically I want it to keep hold of all or most of my media I have about 5T worth of tv series, movies, and music. Don't be too alarmed everything is in HD, or a long tv series such as Seinfeld, Curb, Scrubs, Battlestar Galactica etc. mostly because I got tired of switching DVD's and trying to find the right ones for the episodes I wanted to watch. Would like to have a separate server so I can stream to laptop, TV's, play music in other room's basically just a hub for everything entertainment and what not.

Also Im in the process of building another PC which I'll be keeping in a common room in the house for people to enjoy. I like the idea of having a separate PC keeping my media separated and cleaner than what I have now. It just seems to be a big shuffling and I get distracted easy from my original goal(s). I'm doing some video/music mixing and editing on my personal PC as well.

Yeah I figured I did need a license for each PC since thats the case and Im not going to be able to get win 8 from my old PC I'm gonna go ahead and get win 8 pro sometime in the near future. I have win 7 on both the laptop which it came with, and I have had my win 7 dvd for about 5 years, I didn't think things through and I completely erased win 8 on my gateway didn't think I'd be wanting to utilize it in the future. I don't have a win 8 DVD it came with the PC and I was using the HDD(reformatted) from it in this one. I don't really need it since I have slowly been stream-lining everything so I figured the best way to utilize it would be to put it back together and make it a media server for my house.

Again any suggestions would be appreciated, even if it steers away from my initial plan. Just figured it would be easier to deal with a separate machine with a goal to hold and stream my media through my private network.
