I have been reading Tom's Hardware for a long time. A great forum to boot!
I finally have a question...
The build I need is simple enough. I need an ASUS motherboard with an upgrade-able path. I need the CPU to be upgrade-able. I need 12 to 16 MB of RAM. I do not see the need for more. The CPU however, may need to go from an i5 to whatever is the max over the years.
I am out of the loop a bit, so I will have a few questions.
I am going to buy an older CPU and upgrade it a bit each month. When it comes to ram, can I mix DDR2 and DDR3? No idea! I am probably buying a used computer with an I5 CPU and 8G DDR2. I can stay with DDR2, I do not think it will have that much of of a difference.
I am reading the CPU is important. I will be using EXCEL 2010 as a start. Nothing older. It can access more cores I believe.
So to start my upgrade, I need a board that will be backward compatible, yet has the future in mind. So I need right now, SATA 2, DDR2, and a board that change to a Zeon CPU if needed, in the future.
I will only go with an INTEL CPU. This is where it gets a bit confusing for me. I see certain I5 CPU's only work with certain motherboards.
What do I need to know, to make sure I have a smooth CPU upgrade path?
As far as the application, it does need power. I have converted Excel into a data base, using some severe methods. lol
Long story short, it functions just like a database, however is more powerful in the sense that I need visuals. I use it for sports wagering, and I have sort of converted sports markets, into financial markets. I have my reasons!
But it hogs CPU power, and RAM. Excel cannot go faster once I cross about 12 G. However, I can always upgrade the CPU, for more speed.
From my reading, the video card should have little to do with anything, so no need for too much power on that end. I will even go with built in Video and audio, and wireless. I think that covers what I needed.
Am I safe with DDR2? I do need 12G or 16G to get the max out of Excel.
