formatting hard drives physically damages cylinders?

Hello,

I was mounting 2 new WD HD (1TB) and was going to set them up in RAID 1.
I tried a couple of attempts (first as fake hard ware RAID, or Intel RAID using the MoBo -- the second time as software RAID).

However, now the two HD apparently have "damaged sectors". My questions are:

(1) Can this be fixed?
(2) Would it be a problem if mounting on RAID 1?
(3) If keeping them not in RAID, would they still be stable and data safe?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Pablo

The SMART output is as follows:

DRIVE 1 ( 4 bad sectors)
ID
5 Reallocated Sector Count
Normalised: 199
Worst: 199
Threshold: 140
Value: 2 sectors

ID
197 Current Pending Sector Count
Normalised: 200
Worst: 200
Threshold: 0
Value: 2 sectors

DRIVE 2 (1 bad sector)
ID
197 Current Pending Sector Count
Normalised: 200
Worst: 200
Threshold: 0
Value: 2 sectors

I am guessing this could be because of partitioning the disk?

Thank you for your help, I will do the low level format (using ubuntu actually), I am guessing this should also fix ID 5, correct?

Does it have to do with where you start the formatting, or the formatting type? (I was going to do ext3).

After formatting, should be able to put them in softRAID correct?
