hey, i have a Dell computer with a really crappy motherboard.
i bought it new.
here's my question -
normally, when you change a motherboard on a prebuilt computer you have to re-buy your operating system. the thing is, the computer came with Windows 7, but i upgraded to Windows 8. Does anyone know if i would still have to buy a copy of Windows?

I want to upgrade the motherboard to a motherboard that has more PCI-E slots, can support more ram, support overclocking, and can support more processor upgrades. right now, it has 1 PCI-E slot, 2 ram slots (8gb total), doesn't support overclocking, and can only support 3 processors - which are a pentium G, an i3-2120 (which is what i have now) and an i5.

I was hoping my next processor upgrade would be an i7-3770k, but this motherboard doesn't support it.
I have already upgraded my PSU and graphics card, and I know i don't technically need a newer processor but I would just enjoy having it.

sorry about writing a book, i just want to upgrade my motherboard without also having to purchase another copy of windows 8, because then i wouldn't be able to upgrade my processor for a while making it pretty counter productive because that's the main reason i want a new motherboard.

thanks for any and all help, guys.

Well one problem I could see would be the Dell Case. Most all Dell case's will not allow you to change the IO Plate as they are built into the case. So short of a Dremel and some modding skill you can't change the IO Plate for the new motherboard.

As for Windows 8 I know the EULA has changed and I think you would be able to transfer it to the new motherboard. So if you can get around the IO Plate problem you should be good to go. Short of that you could get a good New case for around $50-$60 and buy pass the problem all to gether.

i was actually going to get a new case too, i just really didn't want to lose my windows 8! haha.
$140 is just to much to spend on something i already bought once.

would you know if i should go Micro ATX or ATX on my new case and motherboard?

Personally I only build with Full Tower cases and standard ATX motherboards. I like the better airflow you can get in a full tower and the ease at hiding the wires with in them. Currently I am using a In Win GRone White Full Tower case for my builds. It is a very good case painted white inside and out with some black accents. Because it is white inside and out lighting it up is breeze. For me it is not all about bling but more about showing off what you have inside such a nice case and being white it is very easy to do compared to say a all black case.
