What is better for gaming. A quad core cpu or a dual core with higher clock speed?

Hello to everyone.
I was looking to buy a new cpu on the internet for gaming only(my old one sucks) and i found two very interesting cpus. The AMD Athlon ii x4 750k and the AMD a6 6400k and i don't know which one to buy. The Athlon ii has a quad core 3.40GHz but the A6 has a dual core but with 3.90GHz. So i was wondering which one should i buy. They are nearly the same price but remember i only buying them to play games especially with the Next Gen consoles comming up. So which one is better.

A few years back, the answer would have been a fast dual core. But now, games are starting to correctly use more than 2 cores, and with next-gen games having at least 6 cores to work with, it will only get better.

So, the quad core is better.

Yeah I was wanting to buy the quad core one. The sides right now games do not need a cpu with a really high clock like the one with 3.90 GHz. A 3.40 GHz cpu is fine and will be for the next 3 years at leas. Thanks for the reply anyway!

Actually i disagree if you take a look it is speculated that the ps4's cpu will have 2.75GHz clock speed. I think that the anthol ii x4 750k will be able to run the next gen games
