what do people mean when they say 'you have to update your pc'?

Solution
yea, pretty much said above and i'll add my 2c worth.

Depends what you want to upgrade for, if there's a requirement needed to run a certain application/game then refer to the system requirement information of that program, either by searching via the web (google) or looking at the back of the box. That will serve you as an estimate guide of what is needed.

With games though, there is a minimum system requirement and recommended system requirement. Rule of thumb regarding games is treat their (game maker) "recommended system requirement" as minimum requirement if you want any chance of enjoyment in the game you're playing.

Also can look at treating the aspect of upgrading like a console in some respects. You have an xbox, to play...

Think you mean upgrading!? Upgrading means to put in new parts for your old ones, to maybe get better performance.

Updating, well, in my mind anyway, would refer mostly to updating your software like windows OS etc, more software orientated. Others may disagree though.

By updating your pc they mean you should upgrade your hardware . For example in my old PC i have a very old graphics card , if i have to upgrade it i must also update my CPU so it wont bottleneck the new graphics card , the power supply to provide sufficient energy and the motherboard to be compatible with everything .

So updating means buying new hardware . Another meaning behind update is updating your drivers or in general your software.

Also can look at treating the aspect of upgrading like a console in some respects. You have an xbox, to play xbox360 games, you need to upgrade to an xbox360 console. Similar regards to pc, parts inside are updated/upgraded to comply as games advance.

Every part in the computer case will either be upgraded or retired.

To put simply,

Motherboard - basis of your computer, will last as long as its needed.
Cpu - Depends on the motherboard.
Gpu - Upgraded depending on user, approx 3yrs lasting, also depending on motherboard and gpu pcie compatibility.
Memory - Can expand, add more memory, will also depend on motherboard and availability of memory.
HDD - Need more space? Maybe faster storage device like an SSD - depends on motherboard and sata connection compatibility.
PSU - Its preferred to replace the power supply unit between 3-5 years depending how much it's used.

Its an interesting hobby, nicer when you know whats what. But the internet will always be there to answer your questions.

You also have to upgrade your CPU if you think it will bottleneck your graphics card and maybe the power suplly and motherboard.

Keith was being real, this thread is bit on the odd side. I mean the way the thread went about things and the initial question could have been more direct in regards to a computer being good enough and a little less cryptic.

I agree, alienware make alright pcs, good enough with an gtx670, would push the life of it a little further. Although the price spent on the x51 if the know how was implied, building your own would have saved doh and had a better performing computer.

But along with building your own comes compatibility headaches and installing software to make it run. Can be a hassle but rewarding at the same time.

I don't do sarcasm! :) Yes, I was being real. I've a crappy dell lappie with an entry level AMD GPU. I was making reference to having a nice system with a decent mobile GPU. Gaming on it would be quite enjoyable, I would think. Hence the smiley, and 'enjoy' remark.

Agree with Boju on the vagueness of the thread. A more direct question of 'is my system good enough', or ' do I have a bottleneck' would have yielded more direct answers :)
