I bought it in late 2009 and replaced the hard drive in 2010 because it crashed. I have a cooling fan under it but still crashes

There are several factors in why a notebook would shut down unexpectedly. 2 factors which have already been mentioned; heat and power, however! Battery, is related to power and so is the AC adapter, but may not necessarily be power related, it could be a faulty component. As I explained in a previous forum, most of the time, RAM, PSU/Battery and Cooling will cause reboots or unexpected shutdown's.

Take the battery out, and leave ONLY the AC Adapter plugged in. Does the computer still shut down?
If so that leaves 5 possible factors. Heating/Cooling/Ventilation, DC jack is not providing a charge, possibly a loose DC jack on the laptop, bad AC adapter, depleted battery, or bad RAM. You may not be able to check the DC jack if it is loose and you may not be able to crack open the case to clean it, but work diligently if you plan on going further into the laptop to figure out the issue. Easily accessible components you can work with are the AC adapter, RAM and Battery for testing.
