I have a desktop computer that is wired through a wireless router that I use for a laptop. I woke up the other day, internet was working fine beforehand, and there is no internet access. I tried all the basics. Power cycling the modem and router. I even followed some guide on here, checking the network adapter, deleting it and restarting.

The wireless and wired connection both work with the laptop. I've been trying to resolve the issue since yesterday.

Which version of Windows 7? It sounds like you the unidentified network problem that can be difficult.

It is easier to fix sometimes if you use Pro, Ultimate or Enterprise as there is an additional tool that Home Premium lacks.

HERE are some threads on it, and you will see how common it is.

I have windows 7 ultimate, after poking around some more, running full virus and malware scans, i decided to reformat my machine. Just finished doing a fresh install of windows and im still getting the same problem. I think I may be sick.

Yeah, that doesn't usually fix it. I would try using the Local Security Policy tool.

Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Local Security Policy
Expand the Security Settings and click on the left side Network List Manager Policies
On the right side pane, double click unidentified networks and then change the type from not configured to private type
Then save, close out and restart.

I did this. Now I have an unidentifed work network instead of a public one.

default gateway should be listed. Its your router. Ip address is different from what I expected. normally IP addresses are in the 192 range, no DNS server listed which should also be your router. Can you log into your router? Or maybe reset to defaults?

I can't connect to anything from my desktop, i cant even surf into the router from it. I CAN access the router from this laptop, i reset it to default settings but that didnt resolve the problem Im having with the desktop.

So, i borrowed a wireless adapter from a friend and I now have a connection to the internet. I'm probably going to order a new one tomorrow. Thanks to ebilbe and RealBeast for responding to this thread and trying to help me sort this mess out. Cheers.
