Want to SLI but no slot b/t cards. Cooling problem?

Hey guys.

I want to SLI an ASUS 680 with a Gigabyte 680. The first one is a 3 slot card and the other is a 2 slot card and there would be no expansion slot between them. Is this a big no no?

Mobo is an ASUS p8z77-v btw

I think the cooling here doesn't matter. Just use a decent cooler and you will be fine. But what I am thinking is if one GPU is PCI-E 3.0 and the other one is PCI-E 2.0 the SLI will not perform as desired.
