I currently have a GeForce 9500GT, running on a PCIe x16 board. CPU is AMD Phenom 8450, 4GB RAM.

Full specs:

Looking at upgrading the graphics card to something like the GeForce GTX 650.

First, my understanding is that it will physically work, but will I notice any improvement? If not, what can I upgrade to? I do a lot of graphics work, some videos, but not much gaming at all.

Thanks.

The gtx650 only uses 64 watts, so i would recommend buying a corsair cx430
power supply. These are extremely well made and priced, and will power almost any single graphics card when you need to rebuild the pc. It should last 2 pc's whole lifetimes. They are about $45. They are also known for not damaging your pc when they eventually do snuff it.

Correct -- my mistake. Correction made.

650GTX or 650 GTX Ti?

I'm certainly willing to upgrade the PSU if necessary.

The diff in performance between a 9500 and a gtx 650 is like night and day. The 9500 is not even recommended for most games that came out when it was new. and its been around for years. Its not considered a games card, at all.
I will count the tiers between them in a minute.

Tom's hardware recommend moving up 3 tiers when you upgrade a graphics card so that you feel the difference. the gtx 650 is ten tiers above the gt9500, and the 650 ti is two higher than that. You are literally looking at 4 times the graphics horsepower.

Budget for a new PSU? $100 top end, but I know there are decent ones for less.

And I realize the CPU is going to limit my performance, but this isn't my main system so I'm not really looking for a blazing fast computer. Just something that will be an improvement by a couple factors over what I currently have.

Au contrare. With 3 cores, a cpu score of near 1900 (400 higher than my old E6600 and almost the same as an E7500) and sufficient ram he will see a MASSIVE difference. His 9500 gt has been CHOKING THAT PC TO DEATH! The gtx650 is bang on the max for that cpu. His processor wont hold it up in general gaming at all. The difference will be huge. VAST! It will be like a different machine. The big jump in cuda etc power will come in handy as well.

Your old card was choking the system to death. A gtx650 is perfect for that system. 6x the graphics power.

I believe the power connectors on this are 4-pin. The specs say the power connector on the graphics card are 6-pin. Are there adapters or am I limited to 4-pin cards?
