I installed windows 8 pro 64-bit on my laptop, but although it has 4gb ram, it is saying that 3.71gb usable. Why is it so? Someone please help.

you have an integrated graphics card that uses your RAM. You cant do anything about it , it is how is supposed to work :)

Thanks for the answer. But I also have a dedicated graphic card running in switchable graphics with the integrated one. Should it still show 3.71gb usable then? and also would it make any difference if I had windows 7 instead of windows 8?

yes, even with switchable graphics your RAM will get reserved for the integrated one because you boot up default on your IGPU
