Hi guys,

I'll be buying a new gaming rig soon to replace my current one. Ideally I would like to continue using my current hard drive with windows 7 retail version.

Both the old and new pc have AMD architecture but I'm moving from a Gigabyte motherboard to an Asus brand. Should I uninstall the chipset drivers and put the old hard drive into the new pc and let windows grab new drivers?

Any advice would be great!

Edit: apologies for the grammar error in the title, posting from an iphone

You will need to reinstall Windows since the driver entries for your current motherboard are saved in your registry. If it does work then you will run into alot of headaches most likely prompting a full reinstall either way. If you have an OEM copy of Windows you may also need to buy another copy to activate it. There are ways around buying another copy though if you do have OEM. For one, DO NOT call the generic 1-800 number for microsoft. It's voice automated, and will get you no where with an OEM copy. There is another place that gives individual numbers for each country. I called the number for Canada and got them to release a friends key, and I told them the reason was a faulty motherboard that had to be replaced. They released the key without issue since everything else in the system was the same. Honestly I think it really depends on who answers the phone on if they do it or not though. I have done it for myself as well a couple years ago when my asus motherboard died and I switched to my current MSI board.

List of phone #'s for each country: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/customer-service-phone-numbers/en-ca With these numbers you should get to talk with an actual person. :)
