I put together my half-OEM (mobo, CPU, RAM) half self-bought PC about 2 years ago and have been using it ever since, though it never occurred to me that I might be working with a little less than optimal RAM space.
These are the parts in my computer atm:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks
CPU: Intel Core i5-750 2.66Ghz Quad-Core Processor
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 500R Black ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic 750W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($89.98 @ Outlet PC)
!!!! The motherboard was pulled from a Dell-manufactured pre-built computer, I can't find a name or any information on it but it's pretty awful. There's only one plug-in for a fan so I can't actually run more than one fan in my case.
!! Similarly, the RAM was taken from the same pre-built computer. Speccy says "6.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 531MHz (7-7-7-20)".
I'm looking at upgrading the CPU, motherboard and RAM all together. I've avoided it once by just getting an SSD (last time was because my computer was running slow) but it's only gotten worse.
I play pretty run-of-the-mill games like DOTA 2, Bioshock Infinite & CS:GO. Also use the computer to do Photoshop work as well as Autodesk Maya animation - nothing hardcore like rendering.
I'm actually upgrading now because I intend to start streaming games on Twitch, most notably for the Extra Life charity event (so I can get some good stream quality for my likely <10 viewers, haha) and I've been having some problems with computer slowing down trying to stream & play at a high quality at the same time.
Thanks for any replies.
