I was having graphics card trouble, and I decided it was time for an upgrade anyway, so I went and exchanged my old GTX 560 Ti for a GTX 770. I bring it home, plug it in, everything seems to go fine. When I go to boot it up, though, I get the famous black screen of death. I can access the BIOS, but past that, nada.

I'm essentially self-taught when it comes to computers, so there are major gaps in my knowledge, but I tried to troubleshoot it as best I could. Here's what I've got:

1. My power supply is 650W, which should be enough to make use of the new GPU.

2. Disconnecting the card entirely and trying to connect my monitor directly to the mobo's integrated DVI socket gets me nothing; the monitor simply acts as though it weren't connected to anything.

3. I tried booting from my backup hard drive- no joy, same problem. I then tried booting from the Windows 7 disk, with identical results.

At this point, I'm figuring it's either the power supply or the mobo. It's surprising, because they were literally working fine a few hours ago (unless my graphics card trouble was actually PSU/mobo trouble?) and now I'm at my wits' end.

Can anyone offer any insight into this puzzle?

EDIT (solved): Well, this ended up being a roundabout affair, but it looks like I finally sorted everything out. I tested the HDDs and SATA ports as suggested below, and they were fine. As it turns out, the power supply was the culprit. Had a bit of an adventure trying to get a new one hooked up (why do so many important connectors have to be so damn small?) but everything's up and running, including my fancy new graphics card, and all is well.

Thanks again!

Leave only the DVD drive connected and test again. Test all SATA ports. If still the same, yes, either the board or the power supply.
