I have microsoft office home & student. Often when trying to use the 'contact us' link on a website Office comes up. It asks for the product key, I put it in, it configures it and tells me to close any office files but then it comes up asking for the product key again!

This is happening because your browser is assuming you have MS Outlook installed. Which is not part of Office Home and Student.

The browser passes the request to what it thinks should happen, and Office asks you to enter the key, because you do not have Outlook installed and it wants to install it.
Which you can't under the license key you have.

No, just change what your browser thinks it should do.
In FireFox - Options, Applications, mailto.

Mine is set to Outlook, as it should be. Yours probably is too. Change that.
