I've decided to finally upgrade my old 4870. My current rig:

Phenom x4 2.5ghz
4gb dual channel DDR2

I'm looking at benchmarks, and it looks like the 7790 is about 10fps better than the 7770 on average. My question is, would I see that large of a difference between the two with my 4 year old setup?

Solution
your old phenom will bottleneck both cards... not horribly but it will be a fact.

both cards have a lot of power, you can get the 7770 GE pretty consistently for about $80 these days, if you can find a 7790 for less then $100 i'd jump on it. otherwise you'll be pretty happy with the 7770. i've got it. it's pretty badass.

btw: i am also gaming at 1080p, though i do have a phII, as i said, your old cpu will be a bottleneck. both cards are good enough for solid 1080p gaming.

I got mine for $84 after a $30 rebate from MSI in may from fry's electronics. can get it for even less now.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127687; $70 after rebate... same gpu and everything to the one i got in may. Love it, it's whisper quiet overclocks well and runs cool. The ram cooling isn't great on that card, which will limit your overclocks a bit, but for the price it's a great deal.
