U3011 + PS3 Low resolution problem?

I recently hooked up my PS3 to the U3011 monitor (HDMI cables I believe). The problem is that whenever I play a game (Dynasty Warriors 7 or Gundam Warriors 3), there is a clear and obvious drop in resolution. Characters look pixelated.

Is there a way to up the resolution?

Thank you gurus.

Nope.

The PS3 can only handle up to 1920x1080, our monitors (I have one too!) are natively 2560x1600. Furthermore, the HDMI port on the display can only drive the display up to 1920x1200.

What happens if you lower the monitor resolution? Or its not going to matter?

Thanks you two.

The monitor automatically lowers its resolution to match that of the signal. What you can adjust though is how the monitor handles the lower resolution with respect to its native resolution. By default, it will keep the aspect ratio (1920x1080 is 16:9, 2560x1440 is 16:9, and 2560x1600 is 16:10) which means that it will stretch the 1920x1080 image to fit 2560x1440, leaving 80 pixel high black bars on the top and bottom to make up the missing 160 pixels. This is usually the best as it provides the largest viewing area.

An alternative is to set the wide mode to "1:1" this will keep the native resolution and aspect ratio of the signal without stretching it, instead centring the smaller image and surrounding it with black bars.

Menu -> Display Settings -> Wide Mode

Do you think the best route to go is to buy a television or monitor that has 1080p capability? And if so, what do you recommend - television or monitor? And lastly, on a budget too if you don't mind (300-600 dollars). I will also be placing this on my desk.
Thank you.

Not likely. You're sitting close to a display that's generated by a game console that's 8 years old. It's going to be jagged no matter what. The PS3 doesn't have the horsepower to generate a crisp and clean image at 1080p, which is why most games are either natively 720p or upscaled from 720p to 1080p
